"Probably just another hunter," Zalmora replies. "If this guy thinks he can take us, he's wrong"
You looked at Zalmora, surprised. The human did not seem to be the enemy you were looking for. In fact, she seems to be quite friendly... or she was preparing a trap. Still keeping her in your sight, you try to see the third person that was watching you.
You can feel that someone is watching you. Turning your head, you look to the trees. Sure enough, you can see the white robes of a person hidden among the bushes.
You chuckle. A person wearing white clothes in a forest... Doesn't seem to be an experienced ranger. You slowly approach the bush and ask "Can I help you?"
The person watching you jumps with a yelp, revealing a nervous teenager. He is holding a large branch, ready to swing it at your head.
"You can see me?"
You take a step back, out of the teenager's swing range. "Yes, I can see you. Quite plainly, I might add" you tell the teenager with a smile. "Who are you, and what were you doing there?"
"My name is Cyrus. I'm a ranger of Jicol, but I was sent here because of the... well, you know."
You nod.
You turn your head to Zalmora and ask "Do you know him?" while gesturing at Cyrus.
"Yeah, that's Cyrus. He's new and nervous, but he's no threat. Other rangers will arrive soon, and then we'll be able to discuss this."
You say "Other rangers? There are others?"
"Yes, the guards that I sent to the village will also arrive soon. We'll be able to discuss this then."
You shake your head. "I need to find the hunters before they kill anyone. The lifes of the animals of this forest depend on me!" you say, before leaping into the air and flying away.
"Wait!" Zalmora yells after you, but you don't stop.
As your wings take you to the sky above the forest, you scan the area around you with your eyes. You immediately realize where the hunters are hiding. There are 5 of them: two on horseback, and three on foot. All of them are armed with crossbows.
You shudder. A crossbow bolt is quite dangerous. While your scales might protect you from a glancing shot, a direct hit might pierce them. Hoping to take them by surprise, you make an attempt to scare them with a roar.
You fly straight towards the hunters, and unleash a fearsome roar. The horses rear up in terror, and the people on foot start to fire at you.
You try to dodge the incoming shots.
Diving out of the way of the crossbow bolts, you speed yourself right in front of one of the humans on horseback.
The human has no time to react as you close your mouth around his crossbow, crushing it instantly.
You roar in an attempt to scare the horses away.
The other horse rears up in terror, and the rider desperately tries to maintain control of the beast, losing hold of his crossbow in the process. The other horse, panicking, leaps forward, and away from you.
You dash to the last two armed humans who were still busy trying to reload their crossbows, and pounce, pinning both of them against the ground with your paws. You manage to knock one of their crossbows out of their hands, the other human starts to pull out a dagger, and tries stab you in the face.
You quickly close your jaws around the hand, digging your sharp teeth into the flesh. You hear a yelp from the human as he loses the hold of the dagger.
The human tries to hit you with his other hand, but immediately lets out another yelp as your scales proved to be much harder. Trying to ignore the taste of blood in your mouth, you take a moment to assess the situation. One hunter lost his weapon and watched you with shock, unable to do anything. The second hunter was taken away by a terrified horse. The third was still trying his best to not fall off the horse's back, and the fourth one was pinned against the ground, his arm still in your mouth.
You look to the last human who managed to escape your grasp while you were focused on the fourth hunter.
The man was staring right back at you, tightly grasping his dagger, with the look of determination in his eyes. You let go of the hand and turned to him, and it was obvious the man was ready to fight to the death, despite being outmatched. You inhaled deeply.
You say "This forest, and all of its inhabitants, are under my protection. Entering the forest with a weapon is not allowed."
Your human opponent looks at you in surprise. "Your... your protection? But I'm just passing through." The man starts.
You blink a couple of times. Despite the seriousness of the situation, you couldn't help but snort. "A group of five humans, armed with crossbows, are just passing through?" You ask in return. "Oh please, you're either with them, or you're in league with them, either way, you're an invader."
The man is now starting to pale.
You say "Since I stopped you before you managed to hurt anyone inside this forest, there is no reason for me to kill any of you, and so... I'm willing to let all of you go."
He looks up to the forest, as if he thought you were lying before hearing your offer, but now that he's had time to think about it gave him a clearer mind. He sighs, and then nods.
You nod in response. "I didn't even wish to harm any of you, but you fired your weapons at me". You sigh. "Now go and hopefully we won't have the repeat of this encounter" You command, before launching yourself into the air.
А концовка и вовсе прекрасная
You see the humans moving away from the forest, and you are quite happy, for now they will no longer be a threat to you or your animals.
With a satisfied smile, you fly back to your home.
By the moment you get back to your cave, the sun was already setting. You walk to the pond near the entrance to your home, and jump right into the water. It's refreshing, and you feel the stress of the day melting away.
Was it the right thing to do? You'd have to wait and see.
Spending a few minutes enjoying the swim, you finally decide to step out of the water and lied down nearby, waiting for the evening sun to dry you up.
You spend the evening sunbathing on a rock near the water, telling yourself that it's all perfectly safe as there is plenty of time before the hunters return.
